The rock steps at Karma Kandara that are carved into the limestone cliff have the advantage of leading to heaven whether you’re heading up or down them. And we’re about to make the journey just as fun as the destination.
We love our cliff inclinator – there’s something undeniably James Bond about being transported up and down a sheer cliff face with nothing in front of you but the endless Indian Ocean and a tropical sky. But everyday? What with the world-class cuisine and cosmopolitan wine list, a little healthy exercise that doesn’t involve a treadmill might be welcome lest you become as sedentary as Blofeld.
The steps leading down to Nammos Beach Club may have been viewed with wariness by all but the most athletically minded of our guests. After all, there are currently 324 of them. It might seem counter-intuitive then to add even more steps and then expect our guests to use them. But that’s exactly what we’re doing. The steps are being transformed into a walking/jogging trek between the rooftop Temple Lounge and Nammos Beach Club. The route will feature designated stops complete with refreshments and specially created signage that will give you insights both into the local flora and fauna and your geographical surroundings. In this regard, there will be a viewing point, which will indicate exactly where you are in relation to the rest of the Indonesian archipelago, Australia and New Zealand. Just to give you an initial idea, if you were to head directly south from Karma Kandara (preferably on a luxury yacht) You’d just about skim the west coast of Australia.
As you head up or down, you’ll also have time to take in some of the local flora and fauna. The limestone plateau at Bali’s southern tip is a savannah type ecosystem characterised by plants like lemongrass, milkweed and lantana wildflower. Oh, and if the long-tailed macaque monkey's appear, please don’t feel intimidated by their speed and agility. And hold on to your sunglasses.
This new route to and from Nammos is designed to be fun, educational and healthy too – whether you prefer a gentle saunter with frequent stops, or to go hell for leather. Either way and up or down, you’ll end up in Paradise.
