Readers of Travel & Leisure magazine have for the sixth time voted Bali the Best Island in the World, which is a pretty big deal when you consider that there are over 17,000 islands in Indonesia alone and probably 100,000 inhabited islands around the world. Last year, Bali lost the top spot to the Galapagos Islands, but in 2009 it regained the title with ease. That popularity was reflected in August as the island swelled with an influx of visitors, the more discerning of whom stayed at Karma Jimbaran and Karma Kandara, both of which were thronged with guests. And September has barely let up. In the wake of such a prestigious award, now seemed like a good time to reflect on Bali and all the island has to offer. And speaking of prestigious awards, di Mare at Karma Kandara was honoured as one of the best restaurants in Indonesia by Tatler magazine – once again a feature seemed timely.
We also take a closer look at the new Oyster Lounge at Mead’s at Karma Jimbaran and a cause that’s close to Karma Chairman, John Spence’s heart, Christel House in Bangalore India, which has a genuinely forward approach to support disadvantaged kids. Plus some exciting new appointments, celebrity sightings and some special offers you won’t want to miss...

It is difficult to say whether our hunter-gatherer ancestors were susceptible to the oyster’s alleged aphrodisiac properties; what is certain is that they could never enjoy them on ice with a crisp chardonnay. Thank heaven, then, for progress – and for the new Oyster Lounge at Mead’s...

We’ve been trying to get all these things right at di Mare, Karma Kandara since opening a year and a half ago and it seems to be working – at least Tatler Indonesia magazine seems to think so – they just voted us one of Indonesia’s Best Restaurants...
