The first quarter of 2009 is almost behind us – as are the torrential downpours that are a fixture in Bali between December and March. As usual, Karma has been a bustling hive of activity – which ironically is mostly aimed at ensuring our clients remain supremely relaxed. Speaking of relaxation, March 26 sees Bali celebrate Nyepi, the day of silence when no-one is allowed to leave their place of abode and not even planes can land on the island...you can read more about it below, as well as learning about our special Nyepi offers.
Staying on the topic of relaxation, the newly re-imagined Karma Spa is now fully operational – a genuine conceptual departure in wellness services, Karma Spa is already garnering rave reviews and when you find out just what’s on offer, you won’t be surprised. With Karma Spa well and truly up and running, we’ve now turned our eyes to Karma Jimbaran. Our trailblazing first resort is five years old now and while it retains its seminal status as the very first all-villa resort hotel in Bali, we felt the need to catapult it into the future in order to maintain its spearhead reputation. Karma Group Managing Director Vic Faulkner reveals more.
This edition, we also introduce the recently appointed Jorge Monje, Karma Kandara’s GM who has been with us for just over two months now and is already making his presence felt. Also taking up senior positions with Karma are Jimmy Kwan, our new Group Director of Sales & Marketing and Edi Yasanta, our new Reservations & Revenue manager – you can read more about both of them in the News section. And for those of a culinary bent, our acclaimed chef Raymond Saja presents a couple of his original recipes for those feeling inspired…otherwise, well you could always make a special menu request next time you visit. Come to think of it Raymond, any chance you could whip us up some of those cinnamon sugar donuts for Easter…??

Over the last few months, the spa experience at Karma has been undergoing a radical transformation, one that has launched it decisively into the 21st century. A vision of the future it may be, but the new Karma Spa is just as much an archaic revival of time-honoured techniques as it is a showcase of cutting edge treatments. Above all, Karma Spa is multidisciplinary, approaching wellness in a genuinely holistic way that taps into everything from core strength yoga to oxygen infusion facials, cranio-sacral reiki to sea salt and fresh kelp scrubs...

Jorge Monje is one of the most respected professionals in his field here in Bali. A frequent visitor to Bali in his capacity as the Vice President of Finance & Administration for a major hotel chain, Monje moved to the island permanently in 2006 to take up the General Manager position at one of the company’s key resorts, where he oversaw excellent occupancy rates (15% above Bali’s average) in the difficult year of 2006 and historic revenue records in the following two years.
